Using the S-Pen as a selfie remote on the Note 10

Samsung’s Note10+ 5G nets the best phone camera (for now)

Not far from release yet only just announced, Samsung’s next big phone has hit a goal, with news that it has hit the best camera rating for a smartphone yet.

The importance of a smartphone camera is something manufacturers have truly embraced, especially given how many people choose to carry only a phone camera on their person these days. With major improvements to lenses and the developments in sensor technology, it’s little wonder why smartphone brands like Apple, Samsung, Google, and Huawei are making tremendous strides in the world of the smartphone camera, among others.

While review websites (like Pickr) tend to go out of their way to push a smartphone camera to its limits, there is a way to benchmark a phone camera, and DxOMark is it.

DxOMark’s tests are trusted the world over to provide a metric to cameras, with smartphone cameras given a score for both the main cameras on the back, as well as the selfie cameras up front. Typically, the newer the phone, the more likely the result will be high, with a DxOMark score usually awarded to new devices.

With a Galaxy Note range about to be updated, it will probably come as no surprise that there are some new phone cameras that need to be looked at, and so DxOMark is ready with a new score.

And it just so happens to be the new top score, as the Samsung Galaxy Note10+ 5G pulls the top spot in the DxOMark listing, at least for now.

According to DxOMark, the Galaxy Note10+ 5G has pulled out just in front of the previous score leader, the Huawei P30 Pro, the Note10+ getting in with a mobile score of 113 over the P30 Pro’s 112, while the selfie score jumps ten points up, from 89 on the P30 Pro to 99 on the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G.

That’s a better score in both mobile and selfie categories, beating last year’s iPhone XS Max (105 mobile, 82 selfie) and this year’s Galaxy S10+ (109 mobile, 96 selfie).

Video scored a high as well, with the Note10+ 5G getting a score of 101, over the 96 of the iPhone XS Max and 97 of the P30 Pro, making it the new top dog.

However we’re not sure how long Samsung will hold onto that top spot for. Apple will no doubt dazzle and surprise with an event in September, and the rumours are coming thick and fast for a new Huawei Mate series phone around the same time, with cameras a big part of that range.

Meanwhile, Google’s Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will likely end the year of phones closer to October, and you can expect to see some high powered cameras there, something Google has even started releasing information on itself.

For now, Samsung will hold that top spot with a phone set to arrive in the coming weeks. The Note10+ 5G camera should be the same camera as what’s found in the Note10+, meaning the world’s current best smartphone camera should be out next week.
