Samsung’s Galaxy S9 sees a leak ahead of announcement

We’re almost in mobile phone season, and that means new smartphones are on the way, and that will all start with a new Samsung.

While there had been some hope for a rumoured new Samsung smartphone at CES 2018, it didn’t happen, and phones didn’t make quite the same splash at the show, which instead highlighted TVs, computers, audio, and appliances.

But mobiles aren’t usually the big things at CES, as that’s what the next big show is for, Mobile World Congress.

Arriving late February for a February 26 start and ending on March 1, it’s the place where we’re going to see many of the new phone announcements for the year, even if some companies choose to launch later.

One company using the event for its announcement will be Samsung, which has already sent out invitations for its next “Unpacked” showcase, and the expecation for the show is “The camera reimagined”, something the teaser images suggests wrapping the phrase in a nine.

The guess with this is that we’ll see some technology spill over from an overseas phone of Samsung’s that popped up late last year, the Samsung W2018, which sports a flipping design that we won’t see, but a variable camera lens that can jump between F1.5 and F2.4, using proper aperture movements to shift focal depth instead of keeping everything at the same depth level, which is the way things are with current camera.

In fact, while the end of February is literally a month away, we’re already getting a taste of what the Samsung Galaxy S9 will look like, courtesy of known phone leaker Evan Blass, providing images of the S9 to overseas technology website Venture Beat.

The renders sport almost identical looks from what the S8 to what the possible S9 will be, and that would hardly be a surprise given how successful the S8 was proven to be.

It’s likely Australia will see the new Exynos processor with facial recognition as it was announced earlier this year, but you can also probably expect better innards, and some new features we’ve not thought of yet.

We’ll let you know when that happens, though, and with a good month to go, it’s not that far that you have to wait.
