A laptop is great for portability, but less so if you need more screen real estate. Fortunately there are gadgets to help with that, and like the laptop, they’re often made to be just as portable if not even more so.
The downside is that portable screens are rarely inexpensive, attracting a minimum of $300 and typically going much higher. Some of our favourite screens from Australian display maker Espresso start from $399, while the touchscreen models are more expensive again.
If you don’t have much to spend, what are your options?
Another Aussie tech company might have an option, as Laser looks to the sub-$200 price point for its take on portable screens, with some models going below $100 initially.
Laser will offer three variations in this pace, with the 14 inch portable monitor being the least expensive of the lot, offering a 14 inch 1920×1200 screen powered by USB for $99 initially, with the price going up to $149 when June ends.
Technically Full HD and running with an In-Plane Switching (IPS) screen with wide angles, the display is meant to be easy to use and portable, joined by two variations on the theme in a 15.6 inch design.

A little bigger again, Laser’s 15.6 inch portable monitors will come in touch and touch-less varieties, the touchscreen model costing $159 before going up to $199 at the end of June, while the non-touch 15.6 inch screen will be $129 before becoming $169 at the end of the month, as well.
“As Australians move more fluidly between work, study, travel, and entertainment, people want technology that fits naturally into their daily routines,” said Chris Lau, Managing Director for Laser.
“These monitors are designed to make everyday tasks easier and more enjoyable by giving users the freedom to create a better digital experience almost anywhere,” he said.
With the price clearly the drawcard, Laser’s addition to the market could make it easier not just for workers to expand their screen real estate to go, but also for students who might need a little more, as well.
It remains to be seen whether the quality of Laser’s $99 portable screen will stand up to scrutiny, but you can bet this is one value-driven gadget we’ll be looking forward to testing ASAP.
