JustWatch set to join streaming this year

Another streaming service is on the way, as a streaming guide makes the shift to a streaming provider. What’s happening, and will it include local content?

Watching TV

Whether you watch TV on your phone, tablet, properly large television, or maybe one that moves about the home on a special stand, you are probably watching something from streaming. Regular old TV still exists, but with over half the population watching on their phones and tablets, you’re probably consuming a streaming or catch-up service in some way.

That likely means one of the local players, or Amazon, Apple, Binge, Disney, HBO Max, Netflix, Paramount, Stan, Tubi, Hayu, Kayo, Britbox, or any other other many, many streaming video services Australians have available to them. There are a few.

And there’s about to be one more.

A online streaming guide looks set to add itself to the assortment Australians can choose from with its own take on a service coming soon.

Set to launch in October, “JustWatch TV” will be another streaming provider, but will have several content partners to kick things off, including Paramount, Bleecker Street, and Australia’s own Fremantle. Locally, Australia is on the cards for a release, alongside the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Germany, Australia, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, and New Zealand, essentially taking care of our neck of the woods on the other side of the world.

The platform will essentially go beyond the streaming guide presently offered and provide both ad-free and ad-supported viewing for programs, as well as rental options similar to what Amazon offers.

And from the sound of things, it may have a slightly different approach blending content discovery and its streaming guide with a content library available on its own platform.

“Every day, millions of people come to JustWatch searching for simpler ways to watch and
discover hundreds of thousands of movies and TV shows,” said David Croyé, Founder and CEO of the JustWatch Group.

“For over a decade, our mission has been to connect fans with their favourite films and shows, particularly the hard-to-find and previously unavailable titles,” he said.

“With the launch of JustWatch TV, we aim to make content discovery, access and engagement even easier.”

Ahead of release, JustWatch hasn’t said what would be available on JustWatch TV, but did tell Pickr that after launch, it would comply with Australian content quotas set out by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

For those playing along at home, that’s a requirement noting services with over 250,000 Australian subscribers must run a portion of local content. Given Fremantle is a part of the content library, it’s possible that’s where JustWatch will deliver some of that.

We should know more about what that looks like next month, with the launch of JustWatch TV expected in October.
