Disney+ adds ads, raises prices locally

The cost of living is going up, and so too is the cost of streaming Star Wars, The Simpsons, Marvel, National Geographic, Pixar, and Disney.

If you’re a fan of any of the franchises, programs, films or shows held under the massive banner that is Disney and Fox, you may want to get out that wallet, because things are about to cost a little more for streaming in Australia.

Yes, it’s that time again: prices are going up.

It’s already happened for some mobile carriers, while tech prices in computers are going up because of AI and the demand for data centres. Now it appears it’s time for streaming services to ask for more cash, with Disney kicking things off, and raising the cost of the monthly 4K plan by a few dollars to $24.99 per month, or by $40 per year as the yearly $209.99 plan goes up to $249.99, as well.

The “Premium” 4K-ready plan brings support for 4K video and soundtracks with support for Dolby Atmos, as well four sets of streams, though there is also a Full HD option with 5.1 audio and two streams in the $17.99 monthly plan, another increase of a few dollars from where it once was (or $179.99 per year).

An increase in cost is frustrating, but if you were looking to save money and don’t mind an ad or two (or three or five), Disney is also rolling out one of those plans in Australia, as well.

There’s no yearly plan with ads, but a monthly standard plan with ads will sort you back $10 per month, with the same maximum of Full HD video, 5.1 audio, and two streams, but with ads thrown in because you can’t seem to escape them anywhere else.

Disney’s ad-supported plan will also skip out on support for downloads, with this an online-only option.

Subscribers won’t expect to have to pay the new prices immediately, with the changes rolling out soon, while new subscribers and the ad-supported plan seeing those prices from this week.
