Motorola’s G84 5G brings 256GB, water resistance to $399

Moto has a hand in nearly every part of the mobile market, but if you’re after a good little mid-range option, the latest G84 could be a go-er.

The world of mid-range phones and budget mobiles are merging, and Motorola’s G-series is partly why. Over the past ten years, it has given Moto a foothold in mobiles, keeping it there while others play in the high-end.

Make no mistake, this year’s Moto Razr 40 range is definitely geared at the high-end, but if you don’t want to spend over $700, they are not for you.

In fact, if you want to keep your mobile purchase well under that mark, Motorola’s latest definitely suits. As the G-series celebrates ten years in Australia, Motorola is launching another aimed at impressive for a lower price.

The latest in Moto’s mid-range fits more in the budget category thanks to its $399 price tag, though the feature set doesn’t seem like it’s focused on budget at all.

In fact, the Snapdragon 695 inside the Moto G84 5G is above where we’d normally expect a $400 price tag, and so are some of the other features, which includes a 6.5 inch Full HD+ OLED display, 120Hz refresh rate, 256GB storage, and 12GB RAM.

The Moto G84 5G obviously includes 5G (evident in the name!) and also includes two rear cameras, covering images with a 50 megapixel main camera and an 8 megapixel ultra-wide with macro support, while a 16 megapixel selfie camera sits up front.

You’ll even find a 3.5mm headset jack in the phone as well as the standard Type C port at the bottom, while wireless is handled by 802.11/a/b/g/n/ac WiFi 5, Bluetooth, GPS, and Near-Field Communication (NFC) for Google Pay.

All up, it appears to be an interesting little play for $399, and it even comes with something Moto G-series phones used to see, but haven’t very often: water resistance. Yes, there’s IP54 water resistance on the Moto G84 5G, providing some waterproofing, though you still won’t want to take the phone with you on your next underwater trip.

The price may end up being the most compelling feature of the G84 5G, bringing a reasonable spec sheet for $399 outright, and offering a unique colour, too, as Motorola brings the 2023 Pantone Colour of the Year to a design with the “Viva Magenta” G84 5G.

That version will arrive in stores from this week with a vegan leather (pleather) back, while a blue (“Marshmallow Blue”) will also offer the fake leather finish from JB HiFi exclusively, all priced at $399 across Australia.
