If you have nothing to do over the holidays, your local streaming service looks to be serving up a local selection of streams.
With the launch of Disney+ this week, Australian streaming selections hits a new high. Between Netflix, Stan, Amazon Prime, Foxtel Go, and Disney+, the major choices for streaming jump up to five, and that’s excluding catch-up services, which each major Australian television network operates.
However even though you can easily find a digital network to stream from, finding new local content isn’t necessarily as easy. Foxtel seems to have a large quantity, but it’s not the only one.
In fact, Stan has announced that it will have four Australian programs launching throughout December to January, with the holidays being the launch window for three of them and January 26 being the other one.
If you’ve been looking for the sound of Aussie accents on TV, the four programs will include science fiction, comedy, crime, and a historical take, offering something for almost everyone, or every adult.
First up is the second season of The Other Guy, which is a six episode comedy following on from last year, set to arrive December 13.
On December 25 (Christmas Day), Aussies can look forward to The Commons, a science fiction take on Sydney in the future where the city has seen dust storms, fires, and rising temperatures affect it. An eight-episode series it will see Downton Abbey‘s Joanne Froggatt join local Damon Herriman and Ryan Corr.
Stan will see the crime show The Gloaming in an eight episode series from January 1 2020 (New Year’s Day), while an adaptation of Peter Carey’s “True History of the Kelly Gang” will hit TV screens on Stan from January 26, just after a select cinema release on January 9.
Written and directed by the team behind Snowtown, Shaun Grant and Justin Kurzel, it will see Russell Crowe, Nicholas Hoult, and Essie Davis in a fictional re-telling of Ned Kelly.
Stan hasn’t given any indication as to what will come next, but with Disney set to take its library from its service with the launch of Disney’s own, plus Stan’s addition of the Dreamworks slate in the past months, it’s clear Stan is looking to push its own program listing hard.
