Facial unlock comes to more Huawei phones

We’re not all going to rush out and upgrade our phones, so that makes it extra special if you can get a feature added to your phone after its release. And that’s what Huawei is doing this week.

There’s nothing quite like getting something for free, and if you have a recent Huawei phone, that’s precisely what you may well be getting.

This week, Huawei is adding a feature from one of its newest phones to some of its older phones, giving folks with devices from last year a feature that only this year’s phones were expected to have: facial unlock.

An extra feature that gives your phone a little more security, facial unlock technology uses your face as a form of biometric security, and for some devices, it has become the main way to unlock a phone.

It’s one of several bio-based ways you can engage security on your phone, and includes fingerprint and eye (iris) scanning, but facial security has become the one people are associating with new smartphone technologies, thanks in part to how Apple has leveraged the technology on the iPhone X.

That makes it a piece of technology built more for new phones, but it doesn’t mean you need a new phone to make it happen.

Huawei’s rollout this week brings the technology to handsets released last year, including the Mate 9, Mate 10, and Mate 10 Pro, as well as the P10, and three of the Nova models: the Nova 2i, the Nova 2 Lite, and the Nova 3e.

The Nova 2i gains a feature in the next month.

Each of these will join what was released initially in the P20 and P20 Pro, with facial security found under the “Security & Privacy” part of Settings thanks to a recent update.

“Huawei is committed to improving our new and existing customers’ experiences. We hope our customers will continue to find great enjoyment from using their Huawei smartphones.

“Huawei is proud to be able to bring this feature to a wider, more accessible range of smartphones,” said Huawei’s Larking Huang.

Huawei’s P10 is about to get facial unlock security.

The update is a firmware update, which means you’ll have to get the update before it can work. In fact, it joins Huawei’s commitment to bi-monthly updates, helping to unlock other features and provide security updates in the coming months.

Huawei told Pickr that this update was being progressively rolled out until the end of July, which means if you own one of those models, it shouldn’t be long until your lovely smile is the very thing taking your phone off standby.

Huawei’s Mate 9 is a relatively old-ish handset, and it will gain facial unlock with the latest update.
