4BC Drive: a digital duty of care

The Australian government will let people opt out of their algorithms and force tech giants to take responsibility for harmful content. What does this all mean?

The Australian government is set to unveil new digital duty of care laws this week, aimed at making social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok more accountable for the content they serve up.

Under the proposed regulations, users could opt out of algorithmic feeds in favour of seeing only content from people they follow. Platforms would also be required to actively identify and reduce online risks, with extra protections for under 18s against bullying and body image content.

If the tech giants fail to comply, they could face fines of over $100 million. But it’s unclear how the government will enforce these regulations and define what is considered harmful content.
