We’re all so dependent on big companies and big servers in the cloud, and no sooner do we realise that when something big happens. That could be a telco going out taking mobile access and payment terminals down, or it could even be when a technology provider you rely on also goes out.
If you rely on Google’s services on August 19, that could well and truly be you, as many of them appear to be in a bit of a drama.
What started as problems with Google Drive around lunchtime on August 19 appear to have spiralled into near every aspect of Google’s services, with DownDetector reporting Australian connections to Google services are definitely having problems. This comes despite the Google Dashboard reporting nothing is down, when something clearly is having problems.
Officially, Google Australia doesn’t have any information on the outage (we called and checked), but the company is also doing some internal checks to see what’s going on, with a problem that is clearly affecting Australian users of Google products and services, and may also be affecting other platforms, too.

As it is, both Canva and Kik appear to be seeing outages in much the same way, making for a bit of a drama-filled Wednesday for workers and possibly students, and really anyone who happens to depend on Google for email, documents, and anything else the company provides.
We’ll update this story when we have more, but right now, if you’re struggling to connect to Google Drive or other services, good news: it’s not just you. Bad news: you’ll need to wait. Maybe take a long lunch break.
