Rode shrinks a receiver for filmmaking on phone, camera

Capturing video is easy with phones and cameras, but getting great sound needs a little more effort, and some more tech. Rode’s latest addition aims to help with that last one, but without the big size.

You can find a camera in nearly anything these days, which means content creation is theoretically easier than ever. Your phone has a camera. A tablet has a camera. Every laptop has a camera. You may even own an actual camera.

Cameras are everywhere, but decent quality mics, they’re not usually part of the camera package. Some phones have decent microphones, but they won’t always stand up to the wireless receivers you can wear, meaning you may need extra hardware.

While some of this hardware can be large, technology has applied a shrinking ray to microphones in recent years, and Australia’s Rode has been responsible for some of it. The company’s latest tech shrinks the receiver to be even smaller.

We’re not talking specifically about the microphones here — Rode offers clip-on microphones with transmitters built-in as part of its Wireless Micro range. However, the receiver in that is a USB-C model only, and made for phones. If you have a proper camera, you need a different solution.

To that end, Rode now offers that, arriving in an on-camera receiver that sits on the shoe adaptor at the top of a camera, but supports its own battery and can be powered from USB-C for longer captures. The Wireless Micro Camera Receiver is made specifically for filmmakers using Rode’s Wireless Micro mics, but should play nicely with the Rode apps, as well.

“We know today’s creators are working across a wide range of devices,” said Damien Wilson, CEO of Rode.

“By extending the Wireless Micro’s functionality and offering the Camera Receiver as an additional creative solution, we’re once again delivering on our unwavering mission to deliver accessible, professional tools that evolve with the needs of modern content creation,” he said.

In Australia, the Rode Wireless Micro Camera Receiver is priced at $149 and is available now.
