Seeing Sonos gear in an IKEA is about to be a thing of the past, as IKEA and Sonos end the collaboration, even though products will continue to be supported.
If you liked the interesting combination of home decor and sound system design that the IKEA and Sonos collaboration over the past eight years resulted in, we’ve got some bad news: there won’t be any new products coming out of it.
Sonos and IKEA have officially ended the relationship, noting to US tech publication The Verge that the program and work on products has been wound down. Essentially, it means that IKEA’s Symfonisk speaker range has essentially ended, and no new products will be made, though the company did note that existing products would continue to be supported.
That means no new lamp speakers, no new bookshelf speakers, and no new picture frame speakers, like the Symfonisk we checked out a few years ago, all of which were compatible with the Sonos ecosystem, handy if you had an Arc or an Era or anything else Sonos-related in your life.
It has been some time since we saw anything new from IKEA’s speaker range, though the company has been dabbling in various tech-focused ideas over the years, including gaming peripherals for the home space.
In the time since the Symfonisk Picture Frame was released back in 2022, picture frame speakers have gotten better: Samsung’s Music Frame is a great example of a speaker you can change the picture in, something the Symfonisk Picture Frame speaker lacks, with only art available from IKEA.
With that in mind, owners of that speaker might want to stock up on replacement pictures and other parts, given IKEA is winding down Symfonisk overall.
And for folks who have been eager to jump into Sonos but wanted prices to fall, you might want to watch IKEA’s site and stock over the next few weeks, because that might just happen, too.
