The humble text message has been in use in phones for around 34 years, and while it has seen changes, there are unbelievably some obstacles still. Namely the problem of what happens if an iPhone owner messages an Android owner, or a group of people with an Android in it.

“Interoperability” — the term used to describe when things work together — isn’t something iPhone and Android text messages usually do well with, but is there change on the horizon, and will it come with better security, too?

This week on ABC Goulburn-Murray Breakfast with Sandra Moon, Pickr’s editor Leigh Stark will talk about what’s coming for Rich Communication Services, the platform destined to upgrade SMS in Australia… eventually.

We’ll also talk about how batteries in smartwatches are on the improve and what will happen to make them better, plus talk about what’s happening with AI if you happen to use Google Mail, Google Photos, and YouTube.

Tune into ABC Goulburn-Murray Breakfast from May 19, 2026 to hear all about it, jumping in from the 1 hour 15 minute mark (1.15.26 to be exact).
