A cheap and undetectable vehicle tracker sold at Kmart has raised red flags due to its disguise as a car cigarette lighter USB breakout box, and its whole approach could just confuse and leave some concerned.
The device operates on a tracking standard used by companies for years, but its disguise encasing the technology inside a USB converter for a car’s cigarette lighter appears to make it difficult for people to identify without knowing what they’re looking for.
If it was used in your car without you realising it, would your phone even realise it? The potentially good news is that a standard makes it possible for your phone to know the tracker is there, with the “Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers” standard or “DULT” basically giving phones the power to identify a hidden tracker.
That’s one issue you might be able to deal with, but the web is dealing with another entirely.
Learn all about a security issue affecting roughly 70 percent of websites worldwide due to two fresh vulnerabilities found in the platform and language known as “PHP”. Technical teams across company and government will be likely working on this for some time, and it could take anywhere between a day to a week for some organisations to fix.
Tune in to ABC Canberra Mornings for October 23 with Saskia Mabin to hear all about these two issues, starting from just before the 20 minute mark (or at 19.53 to be exact).
