After spending over $90 million on its new site, Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology looks set to try fixing it. Can websites really cost this much?

No two websites are the same, but some web sites cost a lot of money to make.

Take the Bureau of Meteorology, Australia’s main source of weather information. While its old site was in dire need of a security certificate and a refreshed look, the site saw over $90 million worth of work applied when it re-launched last year, and yet lost fans thanks to it missing much of what made it loved in the first place.

Now the BOM is giving it another go, and looks set to try fixing things. So what went wrong, and does it really cost millions to build a site?

Pickr’s Leigh Stark joins 3AW Afternoons with Tony Moclair to talk the fun of web development, and where much of the money likely went.
