Samsung hints at a more sizeable Ultra foldable

A bigger foldable phone could be on the way, as Samsung hints at a new generation of “Ultra”.

It’s the middle of the year and plenty of technology is still on the way, what with WWDC for Apple next week, IFA in Germany later on, the eventual Google Pixel launch, and then an iPhone or three or four. And somewhere throughout, you can probably also expect a bunch of new headphones, speakers, cameras, computers, oh and maybe a new Samsung foldable or two.

Samsung is giving us a hint of what to expect earlier, as well, as it talks up “the next chapter of Ultra”.

There isn’t a lot of actual information in Samsung’s blog on the area, but there is an implication that a Galaxy Z Fold Ultra could end up being a larger device that works as a “spacious workspace” or even a “more immersive entertainment hub” when unfolded, while the folded version could allow you to take that workspace to go. Finish emails, message people, browse the web, and even game on the go.

As it is, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 is a 6.3 inch phone that unfolds into a 7.3 inch tablet, which is still fairly small for a tablet experience. An increase in screen dimensions could give Samsung more to work with, potentially providing a bigger tablet.

You only need to look at the Pixel 9 Pro Fold to see how Google has made a 6.3 inch phone expand into a slightly larger 8 inch tablet to realise that Samsung could be planning a 9 to 10 inch tablet for an eventual Fold Ultra model.

The bigger space could come with other positives, such as improved cameras, something that’s always been a bit of a complaint on Galaxy Z Fold models.

While the S24 Ultra arrived with a foursome of solid cameras, the Z Fold 6 missed out on the same excellent camera stack, and even skipped on that 200 megapixel sensor found that makes the Galaxy S model stand out. Better cameras are a hallmark of the Galaxy S flagship each year, while the foldable Galaxy Z variants tends to miss out.

This is all largely academic at the moment, of course, because Samsung’s tease on the topic doesn’t really say much beyond that Galaxy’s AI features will help transform the hardware into something more.

But given the arrival of this blog, it’s also possible that a foldable Z Ultra isn’t far behind, either. After all, Samsung typically launches new foldables in August, and that’s only a couple of months away, too.
