Oppo A9 2020

Oppo’s 2020 A series gets four cameras below $400

Next year is still a few months away, but don’t let that stop Oppo, launching a 2020-focused pair of phones ahead of schedule.

It’s not unusual to see a few new phones make their way out at the end of the year, but rarely do you see them with a name that comes from the future. And yet that’s kind of what Oppo is doing with two phones this month, placing them in with the year 2020, or kind of.

You see Oppo is launching two phones in the budget to mid-range part of the market, and they aim to show that not only can you still get value in these categories, but a fair amount of versatility, too.

The new phones are the A5 2020 and the A9 2020, phones that are very similar, and close to being identical.

Built to be big, both phones feature a big 6.5 inch screen (albeit with a somewhat low resolution HD+ display), a massive 5000mAh battery, and depending on which model you buy, wither 64 or 128GB storage.

As is typical with Oppo’s budget offerings, you won’t find NFC for Google Pay here, but for a nice change, both the A5 2020 and the A9 2020 feature four cameras on the back and one on the front.

At the back, the four cameras are divided between one standard camera, one ultra-wide, one portrait effect, and one monochromatic camera, attempting to solve the versatility point in a phone that starts at $299. The sub-$300 price point is where Oppo’s A5 2020 sits, offering a 12 megapixel standard camera in its design, while an upgrade to the A9 2020 will see that 12 megapixel camera jump to 48 megapixels, providing a little more capability for a grand total of $100 more.

Both models feature a 16 megapixel front-facing camera, though, so at least the selfies line up across the range.

“By combining quality and affordability with superb photography, beautiful design and long lasting battery life, the A Series 2020 will set a new standard in the entry level smartphone market,” said Michael Tran, Managing Director for Oppo Australia.

“Providing Aussies with a choice of smartphones that will excite and delight without the hefty price tag,” he said.

The prices of each of these are very interesting, essentially because Oppo has managed to get four cameras into a phone priced not just at the mid-range mark, but significantly under, with Telstra getting the exclusive on the $299 Oppo A5 2020, while the $399 Oppo A9 2020 will be available on all carriers, though will find availability at Bing Lee, JB HiFi, Officeworks, Woolworths, and other select retailers.
