Old MacBooks get a recall: are you affected?

If you’re reading this on a 15 inch MacBook Pro that has been ageing gracefully, you might be in line for a free battery replacement.

Apple’s 15 inch MacBook Pro is in the news this week, and not just because a new model is out, but because an old model is getting some support. Specifically, an older generation of MacBook Pro is getting a voluntarily recall, as Apple calls out folks with select MacBook Pro models that could be using a battery with a potential safety risk.

It only affects some of the MacBook Pros, and by “some”, we’re talking about models sold between September 2015 and February 2017, with the serial number giving this away.

You’ll need one of the Retina-grade 15 inch MacBook Pro models if you’re to be included in this recall, and you can start the process of checking by hitting the Apple on the top left of your Mac and selecting “About This Mac”, finding out whether you have “MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)” written on the screen. If you do, you’ll want to check your serial number at the Apple support page to find out if you’re part of the recall, but otherwise, you can continue about your day.

Folks that are included in the recall will be eligible to receive a new battery that doesn’t pose a safety risk, though we’re not sure how long that could take. Here’s hoping it’s fast, but our guess is it could take a few days.
